Nancy Olivieri has been honoured by the American Association for the Advancement of Science with its Scientific Freedom and Responsibility Award “for her indefatigable determination that patient safety and research integrity come before institutional and commercial interests.”

Olivieri, a professor of pediatrics, medicine and public health sciences at the University of Toronto, showed “courage in defending these principles in the face of severe consequences,” the award selection committee noted.

A Toronto doctor who defied a drug company by warning patients of potential dangers of a drug she was studying is being recognized for her courage.

Dr. Nancy Olivieri is the 2009 recipient of the “scientific freedom and responsibility award” from the American Association for the Advancement of Science, the same organization that publishes Science magazine.

The Canadian Association of University Teachers (CAUT) believes a new legal tactic adopted by Canadian pharmaceutical corporation Apotex Inc. against Canadian university teacher Dr. Nancy Olivieri is a blatant misuse of the Canadian legal system.

In a late December appeal to the Court of Appeal for Ontario, Apotex has requested to be relieved from complying with a settlement it entered into with Dr. Olivieri in 2004 to resolve defamation litigation.
