Spotlight on critical vote for air safety whistleblowers

This week all eyes are on the SCOTIC committee of Parliament (responsible for oversight of transportation) to see how MPs will vote on a critical motion related to aviation safety.

On October 19th the 12-member committee will consider a motion put forward by NDP air safety critic Dennis Bevington, calling for the committee to investigate recent revelations by the CBC's Fifth Estate investigative program and by The Walrus magazine.

Industry Observers Rain Criticism On Transport Canada

The government's oversight of Canadian aviation has come under intense scrutiny this week, as the concerns of industry critics and whistleblowers were aired in the media.

Two investigative reports dealt body blows to the repeated reassurances about safety that have been given by Transport Canada and by Transport Minister John Baird.

Accountability Act Tabled in the Commons

At 11:00 a.m. Treasury Board President John Baird tabled the sweeping government-reform legislation which was the cornerstone of Conservatives' election campaign. When the House has debated it, the Federal Accountability Act will go to committee, where many critical details will be debated and amendments drafted.

Throne Speech Promises Protection for Whistleblowers

In the Throne Speech delivered today by Governor-General Michaelle Jean, Stephen Harper promised to "provide real protection for whistle-blowers who show great courage in coming forward to do what is right".

This provision will be part of the Federal Accountability Act, which is to be introduced on April 11th by Treasury Board President John Baird.
