Nine "modern day slaves" who were freed by police following a dawn raid on a Traveller site over the weekend have refused to co-operate with the investigation as detectives continue to unravel what they believe is one of the worst cases of forced labour in modern British history.

Bedfordshire police insist that they have dismantled a slavery ring operated by a "family-run organised crime" syndicate that forced vulnerable men to live in appalling conditions for little or no pay.

Invisible ChainsInvisible Chains

Canada's Underground World of Human Trafficking

Author: Benjamin Perrin.
Published by Penguin, 2010.

The content of this compelling look at human trafficking in Canada is as brilliant as the timing of its publication.

"Invisible Chains" has come out less than three weeks after the release of Manitoba MP Joy Smith's proposal for a national plan to combat human trafficking, less than two weeks after Manitoba's first-ever human trafficking charge was laid and less than one week after an Ontario court ruling struck down key Ontario sex trade laws.

A British Columbia law professor is calling on the federal Minister of Public Safety to stop Craigslist from listing adult erotic services.

Benjamin Perrin, author of Invisible Chains: Canada's Underground World of Human Trafficking, accuses Craigslist of aiding and abetting sex trafficking by allowing criminals to freely advertise the sale of exploited women and children for sex. "I'm simply saying shut down this section of the website, which has been known and popular for marketing victims of sex exploitation," Perrin said.

Adam McDowell and Mary Vallis – October 9, 2010

RCMP were hunting Friday for members of an alleged human trafficking ring, which they have charged with bringing at least 16 Hungarians to Canada and treating them as slaves — stowing them in basements and feeding them scraps while collecting their government cheques and keeping their wages from construction and other jobs.

Ten people, apparently linked by family ties, have been charged and have had arrest warrants issued against them.

They were lured to Canada from Hungary with promises of steady work, good pay and a better life. But police say they wound up living in basements, feeding on scraps and leftovers — sometimes once a day — and forced to work construction jobs for long hours without pay.

By late Friday, the number of victims caught up in a suspected human-trafficking operation centred in the Hamilton-Niagara region of Ontario had reached 19, police said.

Sweden's fix: Jail the johns

Benjamin Perrin –Thursday, September 30, 2010

The controversial decision of Madam Justice Susan Himel of the Ontario Superior Court to gut federal prostitution laws with the stroke of a pen this week is a striking example of judicial activism run amok. While the ruling will undoubtedly be appealed, it has ignited a national debate on how our laws should deal with prostitution.

The greatest flaw in Judge Himel’s reasoning is that she places the blame for the risks involved in prostitution on criminal offences against solicitation, bawdy houses and living off the avails of prostitution, rather than on the violent johns and traffickers who are the real cause of physical violence, rape and murder in Canada’s sex trade.

Thriving sex trade, that includes runaway teens, almost never prosecuted

Colin Freeze – September 13, 2010

Thousands of women are being coerced into joining a thriving Canadian sex trade that almost never results in any criminal charges, the Mounties say.

While there is ample anecdotal evidence that human trafficking is a rampant problem in this country, “the extent of human trafficking and the number of victims in Canada is still virtually unknown,” according to a new RCMP assessment.

CTV.ca News Staff – September 13, 2010

The majority of human-trafficking convictions in Canada between 2005 and 2009 involved victims who were brought to Canada to work in the illegal sex trade, RCMP say in a new report.

The report, entitled "Human Trafficking in Canada: A Threat Assessment," was prepared for the RCMP's Immigration and Passport Branch to provide the Mounties with an overview of human trafficking activities in Canada, as well as the extent of organized crime involvement in the practice.

Janice Tibbetts – September 13, 2010

OTTAWA — The RCMP, in its first expansive assessment of trafficking in humans, revealed Monday that there are currently 36 cases before the criminal courts in Canada and that most victims are Canadian citizens or permanent residents who are not necessarily recruited from overseas.

The report, which examined human trafficking in Canada from 2005 to 2009, concluded that many human trafficking suspects, who mainly recruit their victims for sexual exploitation, are also linked to major criminal networks involved in conspiracy to commit murder, credit card fraud, mortgage fraud and immigration fraud in Canada and abroad.
