ORNGE employees who want to blow the whistle on poor company practices can do so without fear of discipline or being fired, the air ambulance firm announced Thursday. In setting up its new “whistleblower policy,” ORNGE hopes to avoid the problems that the former management’s secrecy allowed to fester.

“We are truly committed to continuous improvement at ORNGE, and that means everyone should feel free to come forward with concerns, without fear of reprisal,” said Ron McKerlie, interim president and CEO of ORNGE. “Our new whistleblower policy will promote integrity throughout the organization.”

Ontario's scandal-plagued air ambulance service has settled a lawsuit with a former employee who alleged she was fired for being a whistleblower.

Lisa Kirbie sued Ornge only about six weeks ago, but a spokesman for the arm's-length provincial agency says the case has now been resolved, though details of the settlement are confidential.

The Salvation Army has allegedly been the victim of an intricate fraud, robbing it of more than $2 million in toys from its Toronto warehouse over the course of two years, charity officials say.

The agency fired the executive director of the warehouse Monday. He was put on paid leave shortly after a whistleblower employee came forward in mid-August. His firing came as the result of an internal audit, said Maj. John Murray of the Salvation Army.

In a statement of claim filed in the Ontario Superior Court of Justice last week, Ms. Kirbie, who was employed at Ornge from March, 2010, to July, 2012, accuses its former CEO of sexual harassment, alienation and causing mental suffering.

A whistleblower pilot who has been a thorn in the side of ORNGE management past and present has been suspended following his testimony at a Queen’s Park committee probing the troubled air ambulance service.

Veteran helicopter pilot Bruce Wade was suspended with pay Thursday along with another unnamed ORNGE employee. Both work out of the Thunder Bay regional centre.

The opposition parties say the governing Liberals are trying to intimidate ORNGE whistleblowers at a legislative committee that’s probing the troubled air ambulance service.

The accusation came after Liberal backbencher David Zimmer questioned a former paramedic at ORNGE who tried to blow the whistle on the publicly-funded agency. Zimmer accused Trevor Kidd of being “selfish” by refusing to disclose the names of other front-line workers who have information about problems at ORNGE.
